How we help
One tutor, matched to your current grade and school, covering every paper and the Individual Oral against the same criteria examiners use. Tap any item for more detail.
Paper 1 asks you to choose one of three prompts and write a structured response in an appropriate text type — a letter, article, blog, or report — with HL responses expected to be longer and more linguistically complex than SL. We train the vocabulary, register, and text-type conventions examiners are actually marking, not generic essay advice.
25% of final gradePaper 2 combines listening (25%) and reading (25%) comprehension: three audio passages testing understanding across different situations, and three written texts testing detail, inference, and fact from opinion. We drill both skills under timed conditions until unfamiliar kanji and fast, native-paced audio stop being the obstacle.
50% of final gradeThe oral is worth 25% of the final grade. SL students respond to a visual stimulus tied to a course theme; HL students respond to an extract from one of their two studied literary works. Either way, we run mock orals until the presentation and follow-up discussion feel natural, not rehearsed.
25% of final gradeHL only. HL students study two literary works originally written in Japanese, which then feed directly into the Individual Oral — examiners expect genuine literary analysis, not just conversation practice. We build close, exam-ready knowledge of both texts well before the oral.
HL onlyBefore you book
Sessions run one-on-one over video, built around your child's actual school assessments rather than a generic syllabus.
We match on subject mastery and teaching style, informed by the free 15-minute call, not just who happens to be free.
Simply reach out to our admin team, and we'll work with you to arrange a replacement tutor better suited to your needs.
We recommend starting a few weeks before the beginning of term to allow adequate time for preparation, though starting earlier is always beneficial.
There is no minimum session requirement. We do, however, offer package options for families who prefer to commit in advance.
Yes. Paper 1, Paper 2, and the Individual Oral are covered at both levels — HL adds longer written responses and two studied literary works that feed into the oral — all timed to your school's assessment calendar.
Ab Initio is for true beginners with little or no prior Japanese. Japanese B is for students who already have some background in the language, including some familiarity with kanji. If you're not sure which course you're enrolled in, check with your IB coordinator.
Yes. We run mock orals using the visual stimulus (SL) or literary extract (HL), then practise the presentation and both discussion rounds, with feedback mapped to the same criteria examiners use.
